New York kiosks taken offline after becoming porn hubs

New York kiosks which offered online browsing for residents are being stripped of tablet-based Internet access after too many people used the free service to view pornography.

Eight months ago, New York officials and partnering firm LinkNYC converted old pay phones in the city to smart kiosks in the city to give both residents and visitors free access to high-speed broadband.

There are over 400 Links which have been installed in three NYC boroughs. According to LinkNYC, almost 475,000 residents have signed up to use the kiosks, and access has been granted over 21 million times.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the time that the kiosks would help “bridge the digital divide” by “providing every New Yorker with access to the most important tool of the 21st century.”

Unfortunately, however, some residents have been taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi service offered by kiosk tablets to peruse their favorite porn sites rather than get ahead in a technology-driven world.

As reported by the New York Times, the kiosks have not just attracted disorientated tourists who need a map or residents that need to check their email accounts, but also people who linger around the kiosks, drink, take drugs and watch pornography without any attempt to conceal their activities.

Consequentially, the kiosks have attracted months of complaints from residents, angry at the devices attracting people you may not want close by at all hours.

Barbara Blair, president of the Garment District Alliance told the publication:

“People are congregating around these Links to the point where they’re bringing furniture and building little encampments clustered around them. It’s created this really unfortunate and actually deplorable condition.”

In a statement on Wednesday, LinkNYC said launching the network — which was meant to include a total of 7,500 kiosks — has resulted in “unexpected challenges” which need to be addressed. The company said:

“We know that some users have been monopolizing the Link tablets and using them inappropriately, preventing others from being able to use them while frustrating the residents and businesses around them.

The kiosks were never intended for anyone’s extended, personal use and we want to ensure that Links are accessible and a welcome addition to New York City neighborhoods.”

The problem is currently being discussed by LinkNYC and city officials. Until a solution is agreed upon, all of the kiosks will have their web browsing features removed. However, the Links will still grant residents and tourists access to some features, including Wi-Fi hotspots, free phone calls, device charging, maps and the ability to contact emergency services.

“We will continue to learn and improve the LinkNYC experience for people who use it and also for the people who live and work near the kiosks,” LinkNYC says.

It seems that grand plans to improve connectivity in the city have clashed with street life, but the browser restriction may only be a temporary measure. Firewalls, blocking software which prevents access to inappropriate material to watch in public and potentially timers which make it difficult to stream media at all hours could all be set in place, and may have to be implemented.

If the kiosks are going to become a steadfast public asset in NYC, then they need to solve community problems, not cause them.

Update 16.29 GMT: Clarification added concerning LinkNYC Wi-Fi services.
